Course Overview

This training will teach the participant the skills and knowledge required to identify, locate and protect underground services in preparation of a site for construction operations; this includes searching for known or potential services or utilities which may exist under the surface of a specified excavation site.

This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.

Learners will gain the knowledge and skills from this course relating to:
  • Legislation and regulations
  • Consequences of contact with live services
  • Plan and prepare for the intended work
  • Communication – onsite/utility owners/supervisors
  • The role of safety observers
  • Hierarchy of location methods
  • Application for plans through “Dial Before You Dig”
  • Reading and interpretation of service plans
  • Interpreting local conditions
  • Underground and above-ground markers
  • Positive location methods
  • Problematic situations
  • Reporting damage
  • Re-instating work areas

Entry Requirements

  • There are no formal pre-requisites for this course
  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Payment prior to course commencement – see terms and conditions in the student handbook.
  • Valid photo ID
  • Undertake a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment before commencing training
  • Wear long trousers, long-sleeve shirt & enclosed footwear

We also offer on-site training and request. 

The length of training will depend on the course itself. Some course require a few hours where others take between one and five business days to complete.

The length of our training courses are included in the course description.

Some certifications do not have an expiry date, while others will expire in one – five years. However, this is dependent on the course.
