It is required to have a national high risk work licence (HRWL) to operate a forklift. To obtain this, you will need to be trained and assessed at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). To apply you must meet the following criteria:
Age
Applicants but be at the age of 18 years old and above before forklift licence application
English Understanding
Effective communication is vital to absorb information during the training course. As such, trainees must have basic knowledge in both verbal and written English.
Proof of Identity
Must present evidence of identity before getting accepted for training and applying for a forklift licence.
Unique Student Identifier
All trainees must be in possession of Unique Student Identifier (USI ). This is a unique reference number is given to trainees who are undertaking vocational education training, like forklift driving.

These topics typically include planning the work, conducting routine checks, shifting loads in a safe manner, and safely shutting down and securing equipment after completing operations.
Upon successful completion of our nationally accredited course, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment that allows them to safely and effectively operate forklift trucks in a range of industries.
Forklift training is important for several reasons. These include:
- Helps ensure the safety of the operator and others working in the vicinity of the forklift.
- Helps prevent damage to the forklift and other equipment.
- Helps improve productivity by ensuring that operators are using the forklift in the most efficient and effective way possible.
- It is a legal requirement for workers to hold a valid forklift licence
In order to operate a forklift workers must hold a current high-risk work licence. This licence is valid for 5 years and after which, the licence will need to be renewed. This is done via the High-Risk Work Licence online services website.
If this licence has expired, workers have up to 12 months to renew their HRW licence. Once expired, workers are no longer licenced operators until it is renewed. If it is past the 12-month period, operators must complete a written and practical exam again.
