This one-day, 8 hours per day, face-to-face course combines theory and practical training, delivered by experienced trainers with current industry knowledge.

Training Methods

  • Theory training – students will learn to identify first aid priorities, recognise signs and symptoms of common medical conditions, understand legal and workplace requirements, and apply the principles of basic life support. The theory component covers emergency response procedures, risk assessment, infection control, safe work practices, and the correct use of first aid equipment in line with current ARC guidelines.

  • Practical training with demonstration – the hands-on component provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in realistic simulated scenarios. Under trainer supervision, students will practise CPR techniques on manikins, manage wounds, treat injuries, use first aid equipment, and respond to a range of emergency situations. This component ensures learners can demonstrate competency, build confidence, and perform first aid procedures safely and effectively in real-life environments.

The course uses a blended learning approach, including face-to-face exercisesworkplace simulations, ensuring students gain the confidence, and practical capability required to respond effectively to real-world emergency situations.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements. Assessment methods may include:

  • Direct observation of practical skills during simulated emergency scenarios

  • Verbal questioning to assess underpinning knowledge

  • Written responses to theory-based questions

  • Portfolio evidence, including completed workplace documents or work samples
