Course Overview

The Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention course specifies the outcomes required to recognise the workplace health and safety risks and hazards inherent in working with crystalline silica containing products and to determine and plan for the implementation of safe systems of work aimed at reducing exposure to within mandatory exposure limits. This course applies to building and constructions workers, jewellery industry workers, do It yourself (DIY) enthusiasts and anyone where the health and well-being is at risk through exposure to crystalline silica dust.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common materials and tasks that pose a crystalline silica risk

  • Understand the health effects of silica exposure, including silicosis

  • Apply relevant workplace safety laws and exposure standards

  • Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for silica-containing products

  • Implement effective control measures using the hierarchy of controls

  • Contribute to safe work practices and silica risk management in the workplace

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the 10830NATCourse in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention course students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Provide a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) at the time of enrolment.
  • Hold a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a mandatory requirement for issuing nationally recognised qualifications in Australia.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment at a minimum of Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 1 prior to course commencement. This assessment helps determine whether additional learning support is required to successfully complete the qualification.
  • Complete a Health and Fitness Declaration. Students are required to declare any medical condition(s) that may prevent or limit their ability to safely and fully participate on the course.

 

Student Responsibilities and Practical Requirements

  • Students must be physically capable of participating in practical activities.
  • Wear long pants, long sleeved shirt and enclosed footwear.

This course is delivered over half a day (approximately 4 hours) and provides students with the essential knowledge and skills to identify and manage crystalline silica risks in the workplace.

Delivery Methods

Training is delivered face-to-face by qualified instructors and can be conducted:

  • At any of our training facilities, or

  • Onsite at your workplace (subject to suitability)

This flexible delivery ensures the training is relevant, engaging, and tailored to your work environment.

 

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted by qualified assessors using a combination of tools and methods, in accordance with the principles of assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the rules of evidence (valid, sufficient, current, authentic). Students will be assessed as either Competent or Not Yet Competent based on their performance against the unit requirements. Assessment methods may include but not limited to:

  • Direct observation of practical skills and tasks during training exercises
  • Verbal questioning to assess underpinning knowledge
  • Written responses to theory-based questions
  • combination of the above methods

To be declared competent, participants must satisfactorily complete:

  • A theory assessment (e.g. multiple choice, short answer)
  • A practical demonstration of silica hazard identification and control application
